The Dental Exam: What to Expect

A clinical exam is commonly referred to as a routine checkup. A new patient exam allows our dentist to evaluate the overall health of your teeth and mouth while identifying any concerns that may require attention.

Face & Neck Evaluation

We begin by examining your face and neck for any unusual signs, including lumps, bumps, swelling, or other abnormalities.

Intraoral & Oral Cancer Screening

We carefully examine your lips, gums, tongue, cheeks, and palate while checking for abnormalities, oral cancer, bite concerns, and jaw issues.

Gum & Jawbone Health Check

We evaluate your gums and jawbone for signs of gingivitis, gum disease, bone loss, and other health concerns.

Teeth & Symptom-Focused Examination

We examine your teeth for cavities and other concerns while addressing any symptoms, discomfort, or specific areas of concern.

Digital Imaging & Diagnostic Evaluation

A clinical exam alone may not reveal every oral health concern. Some issues involving the teeth, roots, and jawbone cannot be seen during a visual examination. Digital imaging provides a more detailed view of your oral structures, helping our team identify concerns such as bone loss, hidden decay, impacted teeth, and signs of gum disease. Early detection allows for more accurate diagnoses, timely treatment, and better long-term oral health outcomes.

In addition to uncovering concerns that may not be visible during a clinical exam, these images provide a valuable baseline for monitoring changes in your oral health and comparing findings during future visits.

What to Bring To Your First Appointment

New Patient Exam FAQs

Yes. We welcome new patients from Reseda and surrounding communities and would be happy to help with your dental care needs.

Please bring a valid ID, your dental insurance information if applicable, a list of any medications you are taking, and any recent dental records or X-rays if you have them. This helps our team better understand your oral health history and provide the best care possible.

A new patient exam typically takes about 45 to 60 minutes, depending on your needs. During this visit, we review your dental history, examine your teeth, gums, bite, jaw, and soft tissues, and discuss any concerns or treatment recommendations.

In many cases, a dental cleaning may be completed during your first visit. However, if signs of gum disease or other concerns are found, our dentist may recommend a different type of cleaning or treatment plan based on your oral health needs.

Yes, dental X-rays may be taken during your new patient exam if needed. X-rays help us detect cavities, bone loss, infections, impacted teeth, and other issues that may not be visible during a visual exam.
